Frequently Asked Questions
What is xpdnews?Top ↑
xpdnews is a live launchpad to a heap of awesome adventure websites. Selected expedition websites are checked regularly for updates and the best are presented on xpdnews. When you click on an xpdnews link, you’re taken to that adventurer’s web site.
Can I add my expedition site?Top ↑
Of course. Click here to open the home page and enter your details. You need an expedition site or blog, with an RSS feed. RSS feeds are very common features of blog sites, and provide your written content in an easily shared form. Look for this symbol: RSS feed. When you apply for automatic import of news, your website is checked for an RSS feed. If there isn’t one, you’ll be told in an email.
How does the automatic news import work?Top ↑
Once your site has been approved, xpdnews checks your website regularly, depending on your past posting frequency.
New updates on your website are automagically added to the xpdnews system. Your expedition posts are displayed in the most appropriate category (eg ‘Polar’ or ‘Sailing’) plus any tags you’ve added yourself to the post. Each link on xpdnews points to your own website.
Like all other posts on the xpdnews network, imported posts are promoted in the xpdnews RSS feeds and Twitter. Your updates are therefore read by a large audience thanks to xpdnews – a great boost for your readership figures and sponsors.
Does it cost anything?Top ↑
No. It’s free for non-commerical adventurers and always will be. If you want to post commercial content, you’ll need a PRO account – this is an upcoming feature.
Is my copyright protected?Top ↑
It is acknowledged that you maintain copyright over all content syndicated through xpdnews. Note that your RSS feeds are parsed and used only to promote your content and direct people to your own website.
Who’s running the show?Top ↑
This site is a project of Nick McIntosh, a New Zealander living in Tasmania, Australia. Hi there. The idea came to me on a long bike ride, from Tasmania to southern China. I thought it was difficult to find all the awesome small adventures people were up to over the globe. So that’s the idea of the site: to bring together people who love heading off on missions – and let the world in on their stories.
I’ve got a problem with the site, who do I ask?Top ↑
Sorry to hear that. Please tell Nick so he can fix things up: Go to Nick’s profile now.
Why aren’t my updates appearing on the news pages?Top ↑
There are a few possible explanations.
1. You’ve only just posted an update. Your website is checked daily for updates – allow 24 hours for posts to appear on xpdnews once your website has been added to xpdnews.
2. Your expedition site hasn’t been approved yet. The expeditions on xpdnews are manually selected – if the editor is away on an adventure himself, it’ll take a little longer for your site to be included. You’ll get an email to tell you the result of your site’s review. Hold in there!
3. You haven’t tagged your post. Not actually needed for posts to appear on xpdnews, but a powerful way let people know about your posts. Tags are used directly on xpdnews ( have a look at the tags page) and in RSS feeds and the xpdnews Twitter feed.
How do posts become favourites?Top ↑
The number of page views for each news update logged on xpdnews is tracked. A super-secret algorithm determines which posts get marked as favourites. Favourite posts appear on the xpdnews home page and get lots of exposure.
